Kayaking Adventures

(picture of my room via reguest of my mom)

Wow, what a day! Well I was planning on writing about the new cook and how she is a cool person and how she totally butts heads with Shannon, but then something that was actually exciting happened. Oh man folks, hold on to your seats!

So after we finished dinner clean up Brittany and I decided that we need not squander our precious time in Alaska so we declared that we were going kayaking. We decided to go to a nearby island and get off on the beach. It's called Russian Island. Just fyi I guess. So we go and chill on the island, enjoying the blissfully sunny day.

Then we found bear prints on the sand, which was pretty neat, but was somewhat of a disincentive to exploring the inner island. So we are sitting on a rock just chatting when the weather gets cold super fast. We ran across the beach (about 100 yards) and by the time we got back to our kayaks an insane amount of fog blew over the whole island. At first I thought it might just be a cloud and so I told Brittany that we should wait a minute before trying to take off in the kayaks. We waited for about 15 minutes and it became pretty clear that trying to navigate home would be no easy task.

Luckily, we had our radio with us and we radioed in to the lodge and they sent the guys to come fetch us. I felt really bad that they had to make that trip just for us especially because I wasn't sure if it really was necessary. (We realized on the ride back that it definitely was because the fog was so thick in some parts that you could not see any of the island around.)

So the guys pulled up and I pushed Brittany out into the water and grabbed my kayak. It was obvious I would have to get my feet wet to be able to push in the kayak and then get in so I kicked off my shoes and rolled up my jeans and got the kayak in. In case nobody sent you the memo, the water in Alaska is crazy cold, so of course I tried to hurry into my kayak seat. Well unfortunately nobody sent me the memo that I just am not all that coordinated, so I tipped in the water and got drenched. Truthfully it wasn't that bad, but everyone made a pretty big fuss about it. Just another day in paradise. :D

Note: I'm going to start making the pictures small because otherwise it takes forever and a half to upload them, but you can click on the picture and it will make it a lot bigger, so there ya go!
